What happens at a Council meeting?

Elected representatives of the community, Councillors, come together to represent the views of the community and make strategic decisions on behalf of the community.

They are responsible for ensuring the Council operates in accordance with legislation, is financially responsible and delivering to the needs of the community within the means of the budget.

They meet regularly to make determinations on matters that impact on you and your community.

New Mayor and Deputy Mayor elected

Claire Pontin was re-elected as Mayor of MidCoast Council and Jeremy Miller elected as Deputy Mayor. They will hold these roles until September 2026.

MidCoast Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee

Deputy Mayor Jeremy Miller was appointed as a non-voting member to ARIC for the Council term.

The objective of ARIC is to provide independent assurance to Council by monitoring, reviewing and providing advice about the organisations governance process, compliance, risk management and control frameworks, external accountability obligations and overall performance. The role of the committee is to provide independent advice to Council about compliance, risk management, fraud control, financial management, governance, implementation of the strategic plan and delivery of program and strategies, service reviews, collection of performance measurement data by the organisation and internal audit.

Countback to fill casual vacancies of Councillors

Councillors determined that the countback method will be used should any vacancies occur within 18 months of the election. This method avoids the cost of by-elections.

Appointment of representative to committees

 

Councillors Peter Howard and Mick Graham were appointed to the Asset Advisory Committee which also includes the Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

Councillors Alan Tickle and Thomas O’Keefe have been appointed to the Joint Regional Planning Panel. Cr McKenzie is the alternate for the Joint Regional Planning Panel.

 

Attendance and voting delegates at the Local Government NSW annual conference

 

The Mayor along with Councillors Nicole Turnbull, Thomas O’Keefe, Alan Tickle, Digby Wilson, Dheera Smith, Mal McKenzie and Phillip Beazley were nominated to attend the Local Government NSW annual conference. Of those the Mayor and Councillors Smith, McKenzie and Turnbull were nominated as voting delegates for the conference.

The annual conference is the supreme policy making body of the Local Government NSW and an opportunity for Councillors to come together on 17 to 19 November at Tamworth to share ideas and debate issues that shape the way LGNSW is governed and advocate on behalf of the local government sector.
