Young people – time to have your say
Published on 18 June 2024
A strategic plan to improve the lives of children and young people on the MidCoast is being prepared and needs input from people aged 24 years and younger.
“Almost one quarter of our community is aged under 24 years. We want to make sure we support our young people to live fulfilling lives,” said MidCoast Council’s Manager of Libraries, Community and Cultural Services, Alex Mills.
If you’re a young person or child on the MidCoast – it’s time to tell us what you need to live your best life! Tell us what matters to you.
How can Governments, agencies and the MidCoast community make things better for you on the MidCoast?
You can head online to complete the youth survey at https://www.midcoast.nsw.gov.au/youth-survey.
“People who care for young people and children or work with them have valuable insight and experience. We also want to hear from them,” said Alex Mills.
There’s a separate survey for carers and support workers on the link above.
By completing a survey, you’ll go in the draw to win one of four $25 Shop MidCoast gift cards.
You can also talk to the team at pop-up events being held across the region. Visit Council’s website for locations and dates.
Feedback from the consultation will help Council develop the Children and Young People’s Action Plan.
There are some significant areas of concern on the MidCoast. Compared to NSW averages, our young people are experiencing high levels of disengagement from schools and workplaces. They also have higher rates of out-of-home care.
One quarter of young people and children on the MidCoast are living in poverty. This is much higher than the NSW average of 13.1%.
We want to improve life for children and young people across a range of things. These include:
- safety at home, school and in the community
- physical and mental health
- access to essential needs and services
- employment and training opportunities.
The consultation will close on Sunday 21 July 2024, so head online and have your say now at www.midcoast.nsw.gov.au/youth-action-plan
