Phase two of major road reconstruction works in Queen Street, Gloucester will begin this month, with works between Church and Barrington Streets running through to August, weather permitting.

This important project will include reconstructing the worn road pavement, addressing the steep cross-fall to the kerb, reconstruction of the footpath, installation of a median strip and access ramps, drainage upgrades and construction of a roundabout at the Barrington Street intersection.

The project schedule has been designed to minimise disruption in this busy part of Gloucester, and will be conducted over three distinct stages with one way access maintained during the first two stages and detours in place for the duration of the project.

  • In stage 1, one-way access from Barrington to Church Street will be provided while work is undertaken on the northern side of Queen Street
  • In stage 2, one-way access from Church to Barrington Street will be provided while work is undertaken on the southern side of Queen Street
  • In stage 3, Queen and Barrington Streets will be closed to through-traffic, to allow for the construction of a roundabout at this intersection.

“This is a really comprehensive project overall that will make a big difference to travel around the Gloucester CBD, improving safety for motorists and pedestrians and also beautifying the area,” said Rhett Pattison, MidCoast Council’s Manager of Projects and Engineering.

“The first phase of this project was completed in March and focused on the section between Barrington and Ravenshaw Streets, and the design for this second phase has been informed through consultation undertaken last year with nearby residents and business owners.”

Eire Constructions will be completing this project for Council.

As with all roadworks, motorists are reminded to observe all signage, reduced speed limits and instructions from crews, and to travel with caution.
