Parking, driving and camping regulations

Councils have a regulatory function under the NSW State Government to monitor and enforce parking regulations. MidCoast Council has an area around 10,000km² to patrol, including a number of timed parking areas, vehicle access beaches, and school zones. Our community continues to request increased ranger activity, and we are doing our best to attract and retain rangers.

Parking and access signs are there to help us share available spaces, help alleviate holiday traffic congestion and encourage driver and pedestrian safety.

As a driver, you must comply with parking signage. If you’re not sure of what the signs mean, refresh your knowledge at at the NSW Government parking rules website

If you wish to dispute a fine, you should collect evidence such as photos or videos and contact the NSW Revenue Office on 1300 138 118 or on the Revenue NSW website.

Revenue from fines is used to offset the cost of the ranger service. A portion of the revenue is absorbed by Revenue NSW in its capacity as administrator.

Driving on beaches

There are penalties for driving on a beach without a permit or failing to comply with the rules for 4WD beach driving. Find out how to obtain a permit and where and when you can access the beach from our Driving on beaches page.

Illegal camping

Illegal camping includes sleeping in a car, tent or van in any place which is not a proper camping ground. Council rangers can issue fines for illegal camping. Failure to find accommodation at your preferred destination is not a valid excuse for illegal camping.

Many coastal towns book out quickly, especially in the summer. If you plan to visit, book your stay well ahead of time. If you can’t find any accommodation, consider alternative destinations in the Barrington Coast hinterland and mountains during summer. Check out our destination website for great holiday ideas
