Heritage

We have over 500 items heritage items listed in the MidCoast which are protected for future generations to enjoy. These historic places form a cultural tapestry that helps us to understand who we are and what we have achieved. 

Many of these sites are also very beautiful, reflecting the history of our unique architecture and helping to make our region an attractive place to live and visit.

Our rich collection of schools, shops, homes, memorials and trees tell the story of where we came from. Examples include the many war memorials which are a poignant reminder of our fallen soldiers, and historic shops that celebrate our commercial past.

Before you restore, extend, demolish or change the use (for example, a home to a shop) of a heritage listed item, you need find out what rules are in place before you begin work.

 

Heritage Listing

Heritage listing of a property is undertaken to preserve its historical significance for future generations.

MidCoast Stories

MidCoast Stories is an exciting initiative developed by local volunteers who have a passion for heritage in the MidCoast.

Local Heritage Fund

If your heritage place is in need of a fresh coat of paint, repairs or works to restore it back to its former glory, you could be eligible for some financial assistance through applying for the Local Heritage Fund.
